ACTIVITIES OCTOBER 13 TO 19

GRAMMAR PRACTICE

1- Watch the video: English Grammar Lesson: Auxiliary Verbs available on:

2- Read the Grammar Reference section for Unit 1: Introduction to auxiliary verbs  (the file has been sent to your email)  Ask any questions about the topic to this email if you have any doubt or do not hesitate to call me (311-7303591) or contact me: Skype:  gabrielopa.

3- Do the following exercises from the “New Headway Intermediate Student’s Book” The THIRD edition.  (As you have not got the book from the Library, yet. The file with Unit 1 from the course book has been sent to your email):

a- “Test your grammar” Exercise 1.
b- “What do you know?”  Exc. 1:  Answer the questions in the quiz.
c- “Grammar Spot” Exercise 1
d- “Practice” Exercises 1 and 2  (Send ONLY these two exercises to my email. Subject: Grammar. Due Date: October 16)

WRITING

Elaborate eight (8) general knowledge questions (using the eight verbal tenses enunciated in the Grammar Spot) with four options to answer. Pay special attention to the use of the auxiliary verbs: be, do, have. Example:

Past Simple (Passive):
Where were glasses invented?
a- Mexico           b- Italy                 c- China               d- Egypt

Send the questions to my email. Subject: Wtiting. Due Date:  Thursday 17.  (Keep a copy for you in paper and take it to class)

READING
Read the text:  “Wonders of the modern world”  (Course Book pages 10-11) and answer the questions from exercises 1, 2 and 3.   Do this activity on your notebook.

SPEAKING

Select one of the questions from exercise 4 “Talking about you” (Course Book page 10) and prepare a short speech (about two minutes) answering that question. It will be evaluated during next class.  Keep the script of your speech and take it to class in paper.

LISTENING

 Listen and read the Voice of America Learning English podcast: “Making of a Nation: Columbus and the New World” that you can find on:
Then select and write apart (10) sentences where auxiliary verbs  be,do, have are used. Underline, circle or highlight the auxiliary. Send the sentences to my email. Subject: Listening/Reading. Due Date: October 17.


DO NOT FORGET TO GET THE COURSE BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY:  “New Headway Intermediate Student’s Book. The THIRD edition”  The schedule to get the book is:
Wednesday Oct. 16:  8 to 10 am – 12.00 to 2 pm – 6 to 9 pm

I - READING

1- Read the short story: “The History of the London Police” and answer the questions as in the example given. (The story has been sent to your email)

- Send the report to my email. (Subject: Writing)  Due date: September 27.

V – SPEAKING

Prepare a short speech (about 2 minutes) answering ONE of these questions:

- What would you do if you could do anything to stop UTP’s strike?
- If you were the president of Colombia, what would you do to solve the educational crisis of the country?
Think about negotiations, proposals, legislation…

The speech is to be presented next Saturday, September 28 as part of the Final Test. Please take the script of the speech to class.

VIRTUAL ACTIVITIES ii

Dear SS.  Here you can find the instructions for  the activities related to the topics that were planned to be studied last Saturday Sep. 14.

WRITING:  (Due date:  Thurday Sep. 18)

- “DISCUSSING PROS AND CONS” Student’s book page 112: (If you do not have the book, a file has been sent to your email)
1- Take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by train. (Exc. 2)
2- Now exc. 3. You can see that the purpose of the first paragraph is presenting the advantages; the second paragraph, the disadvantages; and the third paragraph, the writer’s opinion.
3- Now exc. 4. Put the linking words into the correct place in each paragraph. Do this and highlight or underline the linking words.

4- Now let’s write your own text. Three paragraphs as in the model. The topic is: Advantages and Disadvantages of UTP’s strike.  Do it in ONLY one word document including exercises 3 and 4 and send it to my email. (Subject: Adv-Disadv.) This activity can be done by pairs.

Evaluation: Correct use of connectors and distribution of the paragraphs.

d- A file (Word recommended) with the complete script of the report must be sent in the same email with the recording.

Evaluation: Pronunciation, intonation and the use of the Second Conditional, script.
